About Tokusetsu-hokan

The IJN called converted gunboats "Tokusetsu-hokan". Their main task is to patrol. The subsidary task is to lay mines, to pilot ships, to commute and to transport. Ninety four merchant ships, one government ship, one raised ship, one captured ship and one seized Dutch Hulpmijnenleggers were used as Tokusetsu-hokan between 1937 and 1945. "Rozan Maru", "Chohei Maru", "Senkai Maru", "Keiki Maru", "Kainei Maru", "Akitsu Maru", "Giyu Maru", "Kiri Maru No.8", "Nankai Maru No.1", "Kenzan Maru" and "Chokai Maru" were removed from the navy list before the outbreak of the Pacific War while "Shuri Maru" was transferred to Tokusetsu-suiraibokan. Another ex-Dutch Hulpmijnenleggers was under construction during the war and not completed.
